What Can A Teenager Do When No One Believes Their Mental Health Issues Are Real?

Posted by Edward Ernest | Sep 17, 2017 | Real News | 0 |

Two weeks ago, our Facebook page received a message from a new teenage follower. The teenager asked if she ever needed someone to talk to, would we be here to listen. We replied that we’d do our best to answer our Facebook messages as quick as possible as we’re all busy trying to build ourselves a better website, but we’ll do our best to respond in a timely fashion. Our website is an art/humor website about mental health and life and is not an online therapy site, so this isn’t our bread and butter, but we take great pride in being good listeners.

As I was analyzing our Facebook page last night, wondering how we could get more followers from Facebook to our website massivephobia.com, the teenager from two weeks ago sent us a message. It seemed that no one in her life understood the mental health issues she was going through, and she needed someone’s ear.

Before we get to the string of messages, we’d like to point out that we removed her avatar and name, and we asked her permission if we could post the transcript, as you’ll read below.

Also, I am not a mental health professional and was just doing my best to listen to this teenagers story. I’m posting this because her situation seemed to have no answer. What do you do if you’re a kid and no one is listening to you about your mental health? Not your parents, not your teachers, or guidance counselors. Where else can you turn to get the help you need?

This sweet kid from Texas just wanted to do better in school and wanted help, and no one in a position of authority seemed to care enough to listen and help her. I had no answers for her and felt frustrated for her as we were messaging back and forth, and you most likely will too. Hopefully, someone will have a good suggestion about what this child should do.

Here’s the transcript.

Teenager

I’m depressed right now, my sister is pregnant out of eleven years of being won’t her husband. She bought a house, it is really pretty and big. He lives in Houston. Yes, the hurricane tho be her house and right now she was saying that the baby might be born before time, 34 weeks to be exact. And that is just enough. I came from the hospital two days ago Because of suicidal and homicidal thoughts. I even tried to kill myself there. I don’t know what to do. And nobody will understand. I want to over dose with my anti depressants and my mood disorder pills, plus something else I find.

Massive Phobia

the hospital let you leave after you told them this. and i’m sorry you’re feeling this way as it must be tough

Teenager

Yeah. I was there for six days.

Massive Phobia

there’s a website called https://www.7cups.com if you need to talk to a professional or the suicide prevention hotline just so you know if this is an immediate crisis situation

Teenager

So I came out.

Massive Phobia

did the hospital prescribe you anything?

Teenager

Sleeping pills. And my meds I stopped taking. They said to start taking them again.

Massive Phobia

what medication and are you going to take them and why did you stop?

Teenager

I didn’t feel the motivation to take them one day and I didn’t feel a change the next day so I decided they weren’t working.

Massive Phobia

and did you have these thoughts while on them?

how long were you taking them and when you were off them, how long did it take for these thoughts to creep in?

Teenager

No Becuase life was less shitty and depressing and I still had hope.

Massive Phobia

so whats so shitty right now compared to before?

Teenager

School. Stress. Everything. I just. Wasn’t this depressed. Sometimes I smiled. And I didn’t hate humans. I actually tried to be happy and I used to say that I would never commit suicide, but right now it’s been on my mind for about three weeks.

Massive Phobia

do you look forward to anything?

do you have any friends?

Teenager

I’ll get out of my house, away from my father. And I have one friend.

Massive Phobia

do you get along with your dad? and do you do well in school? what do you want to be?

Teenager

I don’t know, it’s fake. Whenever I hug him. He used to abuse me verbally, and I hate him. With a big passion. He used to do so many shit. And he still does it, just not has much. And in school I get bullied. I would like to be a physicologist.

Massive Phobia

what grade are you in? this all sounds terrible and i’m sorry you have to go through this. i’m sure your days aren’t easy

do any of the teachers at school listen to you?

Teenager

I’m barely in 8th grade. I have to do so much this year. I have to get perfect grades to get into he magnet school I want to, it all sounds so hard. I just give up. And in school the teachers I have only talked to one, and she didn’t seem to understand. I told her I had social anxiety. If she could understand and I could sit in the back. She said no and I cry a lot in class.

Massive Phobia

im not from the united states, whats a magnet school

Teenager

Its like early college.

Massive Phobia

but you can only get into them if you have good grades?

Teenager

If you have good grades and are a good student.

Massive Phobia

and odds are, at the magnet school, there won’t be bullies because its all kids that want to do well in school?

Teenager

Prety sure. It even more bullies since I used to get bullied Becuase I was stupid.

Massive Phobia

first off, you’re not stupid. thats most likely your dads voice in your head telling you that

schools not about being stupid or smart, its about learning good study habits and giving your best effort the more you study, the better the effort, the better you’ll do

some people don’t learn as fast than others, so you’ll need to study more if thats you, but you’re not stupid.

Teenager

Yes, but school systems don’t understand. I cry a lot there, and I’m going trought something. But the teachers won’t be there for me, they get payed, they don’t care. Its all just my and myself..

Massive Phobia

hmmmmm…..not even a school guidance counsellor?

Teenager

Yeah. But already went last week and she didn’t do anything so…..

Massive Phobia

what do you want the teachers to help you with the most?

Teenager

My school work, for them to understand that I have mental illness and that I can’t be content with their rules all the time. That sometimes what they ask for seems impossible.

Massive Phobia

ahhhhhhhhhhh!

are you able to get a note from doctors so theyd be more understanding?

Teenager

Well, I did go to the hospital and they know where I was.

Massive Phobia

and have you been back since?

Teenager

On my one day, last Friday. And I had lots of exams to take since we take exams in Friday and I wasn’t there the whole week, I failed all of them. Only one teacher let me take it home but it’s math and I don’t know what the neck I’m supposed to do.

Heck*

Massive Phobia

and has your dad gone to school to talk to the teachers or will he and ask if you can retake these exams? do you have a mom?

Teenager

Yes, I have a mom, but she also doesn’t understand mental illness, both of my parents are very old and they think I am playing.

Massive Phobia

and does your sister?

Teenager

My sister lives in Houston has I said. We love like three hours away from each other by car. So I have never thought about talking to her.

Massive Phobia

i’m not going to lie, this is a difficult situation you’re in but you need to take your medication first and foremost but would she understand you?

Teenager

I don’t think so. And I don’t want to bother her. She is also going trought lot. I do look up to her, I know for a fact that she has a very bad past with my family. From getting raped to getting hit. And yet, she always seems happy, always.

Massive Phobia

since your parents won’t be helpful it seems, you need to find an adult that will talk to your principal and make sure you get extra time for your exams and some empathy from your teachers

and the adult needs to not take no for an answer but first take your medication so it regular your mood and you don’t do anything rash, as it seems like it worked before based on what you’ve said

*regulates not regular

Teenager

Yeah, I don’t want to go back to the hospital but I always get the darkest thoughts ever.

I went Becuase of suicidal and homicidal thoughts.

And I was crisis.

Massive Phobia

if you ever feel like that, theres also the suicide hotline or those online therapists. theyre trained, unlike me.

Teenager

Yeah, I have both of their numbers in my phone. But I decided to talk to someone, another human being, and thanks for the help. Really thanks.

Massive Phobia

no problem.

do you mind if i write an article about your situation without using your name?

or picture of course? i think it’s important that people need to know that there are people that need help and they’re being ignored which is making matters much worse.

Teenager

Sure. I don’t mind.

Massive Phobia

i’m sure its a situation many people are dealing with and they most likely feel all alone.

and maybe someone that reads it will have an answer on how you can figure out what to do?

strength in numbers

Teenager

Yeah, it’s fine. Thank you for your help.

Massive Phobia

you’re welcome 🙂

Teenager

Goodbye human 🙂

Massive Phobia

ha! goodnight human being from texas 🙂

Now, I ask all of you… What is the answer to this situation? How can other kids, like this one, be helped in the future when no one that should be listening to them is doing their job?

All it takes is one person to care. One person to be the ear they need. One person to be the voice they need to speak up for them when no one else will.

Do not let children continue to fall through the cracks if you have an opportunity to do something about it. If you see a child that is mentally suffering and has come to you for help, it’s time for you step up to the plate, be a human being and listen.

That’s all it takes to make a difference and possibly save a child’s life.

If you are battling mental health issues and have suicidal thoughts, please do visit the website for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline immediately or call 1-800-273-8255.
