For this weeks version of our community drawing collaboration, we have our Ghosts, Demons, and Shadows Contest Winner, the Demon of Smiles. It was drawn by mental health warrior, Billy Hebb, and he sent along this statement about his piece.
“Demon of Smiles. This is the guy who convinces you that everything will be ok if you just push down your feelings and pretend you’re fine. Nobody wants to know, nobody cares, and you’ll only weigh them down so just put on a smile!”
Who knows what Billy is talking about just a bit too well? Did everyone reading this just put up their hand? I know I was in this boat and for a long time, and for awhile, it served me well. However, as I got older, just putting on a smile didn’t work for me anymore. I was holding in anger and resentment. I was always letting things slide, and people walked all over me. I was broken, and I didn’t even know it or why. And it all started with a smile. Ha!
I eventually wanted to fix demon smile, and it started with actually telling people what was going on with me. Letting myself be mad, sad, etc. It was very foreign and felt wrong at first, but eventually, I got stronger. I’m still a work in progress, but I’m doing the work at least.
So we here at Massive Phobia want to thank Billy Hebb once again for his beautiful contribution and the reminder that smiling isn’t everything, and sometimes, it can be the worst of things.
If you want to send us your ghost, demon or shadow, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with a drawing and little note about your work.
