Before Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was the highest paid actor in Hollywood and the most electrifying man in sports entertainment, he was and still is just a person like you and me. And that means someone like the Dwayne Johnson can still battle depression just like the rest of us.
After his mother attempted suicide when he was 15 years-old, Johnson said “ The struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed. I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly.”
It was just after they were recently evicted from their apartment when Johnson’s mother, Ata, attempted suicide right in from of him.
“She got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic. I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road,” he said.
He continued, “What’s crazy about that suicide attempt is that to this day, she has no recollection of it whatsoever. Probably best she doesn’t.”
While his mother’s attempted suicide was the main factor in his battle against depression, Johnson also revealed that years later, a break-up with his girlfriend and his failed attempt of becoming a pro-football player was his “absolute worst time.”
“We both healed, but we’ve always got to do our best to pay attention when other people are in pain,” he said. “We have to help them through it and remind them they are not alone.”
