Dear Judge Mental Jones,
I’ve never had anxiety and suicidal thoughts before, but since coming to University the pressure to succeed from my parents, my peers, and myself has been insane. Finals and group assignments have been causing me really bad panic attacks in public, I’m so embarrassed. I was the top student in my small hometown, but here I’m barely average. Now I’m getting no sleep and no exercise just to fit in studying and I’ve been eating terribly. Everyone else around here seems to be doing so well or at least not showing any cracks. What should I do?
Dear Cracking Under The Pressure But I’m Giving You Hugs Right Now,
Don’t think that those fellow students of yours don’t have any issues going on…..They all do! From lack of confidence to body issues, they have it all just like you. I hope that makes you feel a little better, but it’s best that your inner critic stops comparing yourself to other people. That’s never healthy for anyone. Stay in your lane and try not to get caught up in the Instagrams and Facebooks or any superficial bullshit that goes with curating an aesthetic that is just a facade.
Instead, try connecting with a school councilor about your health and turn off your social media, or even better, delete all your social media apps completely. Fuck fake friends!
If you have any friends at school who you trust being vulnerable with, go to them right now and let loose with what you’re feeling. Letting others know what’s going on is important. If you feel safe telling your family, please let them know too. Having suicidal thoughts is nothing to be embarrassed about, and by letting others know what’s going on, they’ll most likely ease up on the pressure and focus on making you feel safe.
I WANT TO REMIND YOU! You’re not letting anyone down by feeling this way. In fact, you’re going to be the one that brings everyone closer together, and you will all be better for it.
I know you may not think it, but there’s no reason to suffer in silence. Put your thoughts into those you trust and you’ll find the strength you need to fight this.
xo Judge Mental Jones
P.S. I barely judged the students you were comparing yourself too which is not like me at all. See? You’re all ready making me a better person too!
