Fortnite Addiction Causing Divorces In The U.K.

The video game Fortnite has caught the world by storm. Most likely, any kid that you’ve recently encountered has played Fortnite at least once, and some play it obsessively. However, what you may not realize is that adults are playing this game obsessively as well, and Fortnite addiction has been named as the cause of 200 divorces in the UK, according to a study by Divorce Online.

“These numbers equate to roughly 5% of the 4,665 petitions we have handled since the beginning of the year and as one of the largest filers of divorce petitions in the UK is a pretty good indicator,” Divorce Online reported.

And Fortnite isn’t just wrecking relationships either. It’s actually taking business away from many other vices/addictions, like the porn industry. Pornhub, an adult entertainment site, released it’s site statistics, which shows what people search through its toolbar, and Fortnite is making a serious dent.

“Spikes in search volume seem to coincide with major game updates and news cycles such as the 1.36 Fortnite patch in January and when 60 FPS was enabled in February,” according to a report from Pornhub released in March.

You might laugh at the fact that Fortnite is causing an increase in divorces. However, addiction to anything is no laughing matter. Besides relationship issues, it may be a sign that a person is depressed, and their coping behavior can lead a person into a deeper funk as they become less involved in the real world. It can also lead to a loss of self-esteem, unhealthy diet and exercise regimen, sleep issues, and possibly aggressive behavior as well.
