Today is the 25th anniversary of World Mental Health Day and this years theme is Mental Health in the workplace.

Everyone deals with stress in the workplace in different ways. However, for many, when encountering stress, they don’t have healthy coping mechanisms to combat their inner critics and everything that comes along with heavy workloads or low pay or office politics. The results of such things may not always be something you can see, but sometimes these stresses can push someone towards bad habits such as alcoholism, self-harm and substance abuse.

When these things happen, it’s obviously not good for the employee, but at the same time, it’s not an ideal situation for an employer as well. This is why it’s best for an employer to have a very open policy about mental health. An Employer needs to make its employees feel comfortable with discussing mental health issues when they come up, instead of having everything buried in the sand so no one can see them. Here are some ways that you, as an employer, can be more proactive when it comes to mental health in the workplace.

1) Be alert to changes in employees coming into work late, decreased productivity and chronic fatigue.

2) Do not talk behind an employees back.

3) Do not humiliate an employee.

4) Do not judge an employee. If they don’t feel judged, they may open up a little more.

5) Encourage an open discussion about an employees life/issues.

6) Have awareness or mental health classes.

7) Listen to your employees when they have issues. Everyone likes being heard.

8) Do not overwork employees.

9) Provide encouragement.

Having a workplace that is open to discussing mental health issues will not be a detriment to your company. It will foster a workplace in which employees will want to create better quality work, and in the long, it will help improve productivity.
