The Rise of School Phobia in Ireland

Homeschooling is on the rise in Ireland as many children are battling what has now been dubbed as ‘School Phobia.’

There are currently 1,434 children that have been registered homeschooled as of  September of 2018 compared to the 439 children that were registered a decade ago.

The reason for the increase in homeschooling is due to religious beliefs, philosophical ideals, curriculum, and cultural differences. However, there also seems to be a sharp rise in anxiety amongst students as well.

For many kids, especially ones that have learning disabilities, the current education system doesn’t meet their needs, as it often takes them much longer to grasp concepts that other children pick up easily. This leads to lower self esteem and anxiety issues.

According to the spokesperson for Home Education Ireland, “A lot of children find the system incredibly frustrating especially as they get older and must spend hours on subjects that do not engage them.”

These issues also lead to bullying as well, which then creates another reason kids might become ‘Schoolphobic,’ thus adding another reason to be homeschooled.
