The Unbalanced Being of the Day | South Korea
Do you even know who Park Geun-hye is? Do you Joe Shmoe American? Do you even care? Well you should as the United States needs an ally like South Korea and now the trust in their own democracy is out of order. Why? South Korean President, Park Geun-hye, was forced out of office by a corruption scandal.
The country’s Constitutional Court upheld a parliamentary vote to impeach Park over allegations of corruption and cronyism. She becomes the country’s first democratically elected leader to be forcibly removed.
Park was brought down by a corruption scandal that has dominated South Korean politics for months. The President was accused of being unduly influenced by her longtime friend and adviser, Choi Soon-sil, who is on trial for abuse of power and fraud.
Friday’s ruling means Park loses the protection from prosecution she enjoyed as president and that she could now face a formal investigation.
This is an unfortunate turn of events at a crucial moment in time, due to the threat of North Korea and it’s Nuclear Weapons program. With the world needing a strong South Korea, it will be tough for them to manage both situations and may need the help from other countries with multitasking their issues.
Sometimes when things go wrong and you are barely holding yourself above water, it’s best to take care of your own internal affairs first before you start dealing in foreign relations.
And that’s why South Korea is The Unbalanced Being of the Day.
